Today’s internet is a dangerous place. It is full of nasties such as viruses, scams and phishing attacks. It’s not just desktop PCs that are susceptible to these, but also mobile devices such and iPhones and Android devices.
One, very sensible option, is to install some comprehensive anti-virus software on your computer. However, this only protects the computer that it is running on.
Internet Service Provider BT (as in British Telecom) has another approach that does not require you to install anything. BT Web Protect is free to all BT Broadband customers. If you activate this, BT will take on the work of checking your web connection. It will scan all web traffic that is coming down your BT broadband for the nasties and block them out. As this is happening at the network level before the data reaches you there is nothing to install and protection will be applied to all devices on your home network.
Protection doesn’t stop at home though. If you are out of the home and sign into a BT WiFi hotspot with your BT ID then the network level protection will be applied there too.
Of course for this to be enabled you have to be happy with BT processing and scanning your data, and this is something for you to decide. We think that it is the right move to switch it on.
