Lucky residents moving into the new Battersea Power Station will have access to the fastest broadband in the country via Hyperoptic.
The network provides ultrafast gigabit broadband that operates around 30 times faster than the national average. Hyperoptic are noticeably different to other UK Internet providers because they provide real fibre optic broadband, rather than the more common fibre to phone line technology.
Hyperoptic’s new FTTP broadband will be installed in 865 flats as part of the first phase, but they hope to work across the entire development – which will include Apple’s new British HQ. The tech giant plans to move 3,000 of their staff into the building by 2021.
This is good news for Britain’s digital sector. When pitted against the broadband speeds of Europe’s capitals, London fell behind at 26th place in a recent league table. Currently downloads take three times longer on average than in Paris.
But improved connectivity is clearly is a priority in the UK. Last month the government announced plans to include broadband funding in their post-Brexit policy, while Chancellor Philip Hammond pledged £400 million to the industry as part of the country’s digital infrastructure fund. The announcement about superfast broadband in Battersea is promising for the country’s technology sector.
Mike Varney, the building services technical manager at the Battersea Power Station Development Company said in a statement: “World-class infrastructure is at the heart of our award-winning project. All of our suppliers have been strategically selected to support this vision and give our vibrant Battersea Power Station community the best services in the market.”
He added: “Broadband infrastructure may be invisible, but its impact on our resident’s quality of life is significant. Hyperoptic is renowned in the industry for its phenomenal speeds, product range and service delivery. On behalf of our Malaysian shareholders, we are thrilled to have Hyperoptic on board as a supplier.”
Hyperoptic are clearly excited about the new deal. David Walker, their head of property said: “The Battersea Power Station project is one of the UK’s most exciting redevelopment and place-making schemes, centred around one of the capital’s most recognisable landmarks.”
He added: “Every detail of the project has been meticulously planned to deliver a new, unrivalled community living experience. To be chosen to deliver the connectivity is further recognition of our true fibre approach, which is the benchmark of excellence for the UK broadband industry.”
